/ OUR NAME
Abantu (or “Bantu”) is a word used by different linguistic groups of people in sub-Saharan Africa to mean “People”.
The choice of this name was based on the Philosophy that regardless of our geographical or cultural backgrounds, we are to achieve a lot together as a people.
In relation to our work however, we do not only believe that just being a “United Group of Persons” is enough, but instead we also would like to do our work fastening ourselves and values on the most Core Value of ‘UBUNTU’. Ubuntu comes from the Zulu and Xhola languages but also commonly used in other African languages like Banyoro, Batooro and Bakiga of Western Uganda. It refers to “the human traits of generosity, consideration and humaneness towards others in the community”.
“Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can’t exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness. […] We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity” (Bishop Desmond Tutu)
Therefore, as an organisation, together with our friends and partners, we set ourselves forth out by joining our resources and expertise, the Ubuntu Spirit and Love to uplift our fellow Bantu (human beings).
